An Introduction to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

Crisis situations are as varied as the individuals and communities impacted by them. Because there is no “one size fits all” approach to crisis intervention, we need a comprehensive and flexible set of tools and strategies to support people experiencing critical incident stress.

Join Dr. Dean Grace for an in-depth introduction to the process of planning for, and intervening in, crisis situations. Dr. Grace will discuss the assessment skills needed to understand how people are responding to a crisis, enabling us to determine which interventions to use and when. The session will explore both the strategic and tactical considerations involved in effective crisis management.

What You’ll Learn

  • The purpose and structure of crisis intervention

  • Why crisis responses vary widely—and how interventions must adapt

  • Core skills for assessing crisis reactions

  • Overview of the CISM model and its integrated system of supports

  • Strategic and tactical considerations during crisis intervention

  • Information on upcoming CISM training and certification options

This session is ideal for professionals who support individuals or groups following critical incidents and who wish to strengthen their skills in evidence‑informed crisis response.
